چکیده

As more and more traffic is transported over communication networks, network survivability becomes a key issue in network design and planning. In this paper first the need for deploying network recovery techniques at multiple layers is motivated. Then the efficient coordination of these network recovery techniques is studied. Not only static but also dynamic multi-layer survivability strategies are presented and studied in this paper: dynamic multi-layer survivability strategies benefit from the ability of the underlying transport network to provide switched connection services in order to allow reconfiguring the logical network at the time of a failure. As not only the traffic volume keeps growing, but also more and more services with distinct reliability requirements are deployed, the benefit of differentiating the multilayer survivability strategy per traffic class is investigated in this paper. Whereas the case studies in this paper focus on the cost-efficiency of the presented strategies and techniques, also a broader theoretic discussion is given on these techniques.

Survivable routing in IP-over-WDM networks: An efficient and scalable local search algorithm

In IP-over-WDM networks, a logical IP network is routed on top of a physical optical fiber network. An important challenge hereby is to make the routing survivable. We call a routing survivable if the connectivity of the logical network is guaranteed in case of a failure in the physical network. In this paper we describe FastSurv, a local search algorithm for survivable routing. The algorithm w...

Path Location Register for Next-Generation Heterogeneous Mobile Networks

Deployment of a global all IP wireless/mobile network is not a straightforward decision. Heterogeneous mobile networks combined with wireless “hot-spot” locations seams to be one of the most realistic early deployments. Commercial public wireless LAN solutions however offer proprietary location management capabilities compared to the traditional cellular networks. The increasing demands for het...

An Integrated Approach to Management of IP-over-Optical Networks: Toward Intelligent Survivable Networks

The convergence of IP and optical network through the GMPLS common control plane motivates a new paradigm of integrated network management, in which multiple network layers cooperate to make the most use of available network resources. We illustrate how this new management paradigm makes possible intelligent survivable networks. We propose four components necessary to achieve differentiated end...

Optimized design of survivable MPLS over optical transport networks

In this paper we study different options for the survivability implementation in MPLS over Optical Transport Networks (OTN) in terms of network resource usage and configuration cost. We investigate two approaches to the survivability deployment: single layer and multilayer survivability and present various methods for spare capacity allocation (SCA) to reroute disrupted traffic. The comparative...

Restoration Design in IP over Reconfigurable All-Optical Networks

Large IP backbone networks today are mostly deployed directly over sequences of point-to-point DWDM systems or chains of newer ROADM-based ultra long haul systems, interconnected by OEO regenerators. The next generation core optical network is moving toward an all-optical network architecture that is based on multi-degree ROADMs to reduce OEO regeneration cost as well as enabling automatic reco...
